Plasschaert to Al-Samarrai: The request to end the UNAMI mission will be presented to the Security Council as soon as possible


The Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Jeanine Plasschaert, informed today, Monday, the head of the Azm Alliance, Muthanna Al-Samarrai, that Iraq’s request to end the ‘UNAMI’ mission will be presented to the Security Council.

A statement by the Azm Alliance stated that the head of the coalition, Muthanna Al-Samarrai, received today, Monday, in his office in Baghdad, Jeanine Plasschaert, Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Iraq and Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI).

The statement indicated that “the meeting focused on evaluating political developments in Iraq and the region, as well as discussing the efforts of the United Nations mission to provide support and assistance to Iraq, and the Iraqi government’s request to end the Mission of the United Nations mission in Iraq.”

The UN envoy confirmed, according to the statement, that “this request will be presented to the Security Council to take a decision on it
as soon as possible.”

While Al-Samarrai expressed his thanks to Plasschaert and her team for the efforts they made over the past years in supporting Iraq, according to the statement.

The Iraqi government issued Yesterday, Sunday, a new statement regarding ending the work of the United Nations Mission in Iraq, while confirming that ending the mission’s work is a natural result of the development of the relationship between Iraq and the United Nations, and a deepening of cooperation at various other levels.
