Baghdad: Prime Minister Ali Faleh Al-Zaidi affirmed on Monday that Iraq will not allow its territory to be used as a base for launching threats against neighboring countries. He emphasized Iraq’s role in de-escalating regional tensions and fostering dialogue, as well as its commitment to building stronger ties with international partners.
According to Iraqi News Agency, in an article published in the French newspaper *Le Figaro*, Prime Minister Al-Zaidi highlighted the historical and strategic partnership between Iraq and France, spanning various sectors such as economy, energy, industry, and culture. He noted that his meeting with President Emmanuel Macron provides an opportunity to reshape and strengthen this relationship based on mutual interests.
Al-Zaidi elaborated that Iraq seeks to redefine its relations with France and Europe, positioning itself as an active partner rather than a nation in need of assistance. The Prime Minister underscored the importance of regional, European, and international efforts in containing tensions, particularly during his visits to France and Germany.
The Prime Minister highlighted Iraq’s growing stability and sovereignty, noting its potential as a stronger partner for France and Europe, contributing to regional stability and prosperity. He pointed out the impact of the Strait of Hormuz crisis on Iraq’s oil export capacity and trade flows, emphasizing Europe’s interest in a stable Iraq for their economic and security interests.
Al-Zaidi reiterated Iraq’s policy of dialogue, balance, and non-alignment, ensuring that its territory will not be used for regional conflicts. He stressed that Iraq’s role in reducing tensions begins with building a strong state at home, bringing all arms under state control to establish a unified state without competing centers of power.
Strengthening security and military institutions and enhancing cybersecurity are key priorities for Iraq, according to the Prime Minister. He also emphasized the importance of deepening cooperation with international partners following the conclusion of the Global Coalition’s mission.
Al-Zaidi noted Iraq’s strategic position as a corridor for trade and energy, connecting the Gulf, Asia, Turkey, and Europe. He highlighted the Development Road Project, which will link the Gulf to Europe through an extensive network of roads and railways.
The Prime Minister concluded by stating Iraq’s goal of becoming stronger, more stable, and sovereign, with enhanced partnerships with France and deeper engagement with Europe, focusing on investment, job creation, technology transfer, and developing Iraqi capabilities.
