Accra:PM Ali Al-Zaidi addressed the Iraqi people on the Republic of Iraq’s National Day, emphasizing unity and national cohesion.
According to Iraqi News Agency, the Prime Minister extended his best wishes to the Iraqi people, marking October 3rd as a celebration of over 90 years of independence and recognition as an independent state. He noted Iraq’s historical significance as the first Arab state to join the League of Nations and its role in founding the United Nations.
Al-Zaidi reflected on Iraq’s rich history, describing the nation as the birthplace of human civilization, writing, and laws. He acknowledged the complex political periods that have hindered development but highlighted the democratic governance established post-2003, reinforced by a permanent Constitution ensuring the peaceful transfer of power.
He stated that Iraq completed the restoration of its sovereignty on September 30, 2026, with the conclusion of the International Coalition’s military mission. Now, Iraq maintains control over its decisions and territory, with military authority centralized under the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.
Despite ongoing challenges, Iraq is pursuing a balanced foreign policy focused on mutual interests and respect. Al-Zaidi addressed the intertwined economic and international circumstances, emphasizing the development of a diversified economy, effective global partnerships, private sector empowerment, and job creation.
The Prime Minister outlined plans for program- and performance-based budgeting, linking government spending to results, and initiatives like the One Million Residential Land Plots and the Future Generations Fund. These efforts aim to position Iraq as a trade route, energy corridor, investment hub, and bridge between East and West.
Al-Zaidi pledged continued efforts to combat corruption, protect public funds, and strengthen oversight, while navigating complex regional challenges to safeguard Iraq’s interests and sovereignty.
He concluded by expressing a commitment to unity and national cohesion, pledging to prioritize Iraq’s interests and citizens, and striving for a strong and just state.
