Baghdad: President Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid of Iraq inaugurated the library of the General Union of Writers and Authors in Iraq, named in honor of the late writer and poet Alfred Semaan. The event, attended by the Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Muhammad Al-Hassan, and a large assembly of Arab and Iraqi writers, marked a significant cultural milestone for the region. According to National Iraqi News Agency, President Rashid welcomed the Arab writers who traveled to Baghdad for the occasion, expressing Iraq's pride and appreciation for the contributions of writers from various Arab nations. He emphasized the importance of creative collaboration among intellectuals to enhance their role in fostering social and cultural development. The President highlighted the necessity of activating coordination and communication with reputable international libraries and universities to facilitate the exchange of benefits and scientific expertise. He also addressed the regional develo pments, particularly the ongoing conflicts affecting innocent people in Palestine and Lebanon, affirming Iraq's support for its counterparts in Beirut and Gaza. President Rashid noted the adverse impact of these conditions on cultural and literary movements. Furthermore, President Rashid reiterated Iraq's historical interest in books and libraries, expressing his commitment to supporting the further development of the Union Library. He envisions the library as a repository for cultural, intellectual, and creative works, reflecting the diverse and multifaceted nature of Iraqi national culture and its various living languages.
