President of the Republic Calls for Cessation of Hostilities Amid Regional Concerns

Baghdad: President of the Republic, Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid, has expressed regional concerns over the ongoing Israeli attacks, emphasizing the serious threat posed by the continued presence of Al-Hol camp on the Syria-Iraq border. Rashid’s statements were made during an interview with France 24, highlighting the broader implications of these issues for regional stability.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Rashid underscored the unsustainable nature of the situation in Gaza, pointing to the ongoing bloodshed and shortages of essential supplies. He stressed that peace and stability in the region can only be achieved through an immediate cessation of hostilities. Rashid also addressed the status of US forces in Iraq, suggesting that the current stage in Iraq’s development no longer necessitates their presence, with the final decision on withdrawal pending agreement between Iraq and the United States.

Rashid further highlighted the defeat of ISIS and the control over national borders, emphasizing the importance of monitoring any terrorist movements in the region. He reiterated Iraq’s commitment to closing Al-Hol camp, citing its threat to Syria, Iraq, and potentially Turkey.

In discussing external military actions, Rashid expressed hope that attacks on Iranian facilities by Israel or the United States would not occur again, noting Iran’s repeated assurances against pursuing nuclear weapons. He affirmed the role of the Popular Mobilization Forces within Iraq’s security framework, established to combat ISIS and terrorism.

On domestic matters, Rashid mentioned ongoing dialogue between the federal government and the Kurdistan Regional Government, which recently resulted in an agreement on oil exports. He also addressed the upcoming elections, assuring efforts to ensure they are conducted fairly and under international monitoring.
