Ankara: Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani emphasized the strong ties binding Iraq and Turkey, highlighting their shared neighborly relations, common interests, historical connections, and social and religious affiliations. During a joint press conference with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Al-Sudani articulated the enduring relationship between the two countries, underscoring the continuation of dialogue following Erdogan’s visit to Baghdad last year.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, Al-Sudani highlighted the foundational aspects of the Iraqi-Turkish relationship, particularly focusing on security and the mutual challenges posed by terrorism. He reiterated Iraq’s firm stance on security as an indivisible element linking the safety of both nations. Al-Sudani also addressed the issue of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), reaffirming Iraq’s legal position prohibiting any party from using Iraqi territory to launch attacks on neighboring countries.
Al-Sudani stressed the importance of collaboration in security operations and intelligence sharing to uphold Iraqi sovereignty within the confines of international law. He welcomed initiatives aimed at advancing political processes and disarming the PKK. Furthermore, discussions extended to water management, with ongoing committee meetings designed to establish a framework for future projects. Al-Sudani announced the initiation of nine projects under the water agreement, including water harvesting and treatment initiatives.
Additionally, ten memoranda of understanding were signed, covering areas such as migration, judicial cooperation, higher education, and emergency management. Al-Sudani also addressed the “Development Road” project, viewing it as a pivotal opportunity to enhance bilateral ties and regional integration. Plans are underway to create an independent authority to manage this initiative, aiming to streamline operations and attract investment.
Al-Sudani expressed Iraq’s commitment to developing industrial partnerships with Turkey, including the establishment of Turkish factories in collaboration with the Iraqi private sector. He also affirmed Iraq’s principled stance on the ongoing conflict in Palestine and Gaza, advocating for peace and stability in the region.
The Prime Minister reiterated Iraq’s clear position on Syria, advocating for a political process that represents all Syrian factions while preserving minority rights. Iraq continues its cooperation with Damascus and remains dedicated to countering ISIS through collaborative regional efforts.
