Baghdad: Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi directed the preparation of a draft law on Tuesday to restrict weapons to the state, aligning with constitutional provisions. He stated that the spread of uncontrolled weapons poses a significant threat to the state as it undermines the rule of law and weakens the authority of security institutions.

According to Iraqi News Agency, the Prime Minister’s Media Office released a statement indicating that Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi met with Chairman of the Parliamentary Security and Defence Committee Khalid Mutab al-Obeidi and members of the committee. The meeting involved a review of the current situation in the country and the efforts by various security forces to maintain security, stability, and protect the country’s borders and airspace against threats, particularly given the regional developments and repercussions.

The statement highlighted the Prime Minister’s directive to prepare a draft law restricting weapons to state control in line with constitutional provisions. Al-Zaidi underscored the proliferation of weapons as the most serious threat, as it undermines the rule of law and weakens security institutions.

The Prime Minister emphasized the need to strengthen the state’s position through its sovereignty, authority, and constitutional institutions. He stressed the importance of enhancing the military’s capabilities to ensure internal stability, which is essential for economic, political, and security stability, thus safeguarding Iraq’s security and the safety of its people and resources.

Al-Zaidi also highlighted the necessity of integrated work and coordination between the executive and legislative branches to bolster stability, enact legislation, and provide a legislative framework for the government’s development plans and programs. He mentioned the importance of holding regular meetings with the Parliamentary Security and Defence Committee to finalize these issues.

The Chairman of the Parliamentary Security and Defence Committee confirmed the committee’s support through its oversight and legislative role for all government procedures and steps aimed at strengthening the state and its security and military institutions. This includes enhancing the capabilities of the armed forces, protecting borders, developing air defense systems, and raising readiness levels to safeguard Iraq’s security and preserve its sovereignty amid regional and international crises.
