Baghdad: A rare scientific discovery has documented a new habitat for blind cavefish in the Western Desert, marking a significant advancement in the fields of biodiversity and water resources in Iraq. Led by Dr. Omar Fadhil Abdul Rahman and Dr. Mukhtar Khamis Habba from the University of Baghdad’s College of Science, the scientific team has identified a previously undocumented location hosting a large number of Iraqi blind cavefish.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, this remarkable finding occurs over seventy years after the species was first documented in Anbar Governorate in 1953. It presents new opportunities for research into the distribution and physical traits of the blind cavefish, as well as an analysis of the environmental, geological, and hydrological characteristics of the newly discovered site. The discovery also supports ongoing scientific surveys aimed at identifying additional potential habitats in the region.

The exploration and documentation efforts were conducted in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, the Iraqi Green Climate Organization, and the Environmental Police Command in Anbar Governorate. The University of Baghdad played a crucial academic and research role in this endeavor, highlighting the importance of cooperative work between scientific and governmental bodies in advancing environmental discoveries.
