Basra: The exchange of remains of missing persons from the 1980s war between Iraq and Iran occurred today, Sunday, at the al-Shalamcheh border crossing. This significant event marks a moment of closure for many families affected by the prolonged conflict between the two nations.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the exchange was conducted under the supervision of the International Committee of the Red Cross. The event was attended by various dignitaries, including the representative of the local Basra government, Deputy Governor Hassan Al-Najjar, as well as a number of officials and human rights representatives. During the exchange, the remains of 21 Iraqi martyrs and 41 Iranian missing persons were received by their respective parties.

The process of exchanging remains is a part of ongoing efforts to address the humanitarian consequences of the war, which lasted from 1980 to 1988 and resulted in significant loss of life and displacement. The involvement of international organizations and local authorities highlights the collaborative efforts to resolve lingering issues from the conflict.
