Moscow: Russia and Ukraine exchanged fire in recent hours, targeting energy facilities, military centers, and logistics hubs. The Russian Ministry of Defense announced in a statement on Sunday that its forces had targeted transport and energy infrastructure facilities and logistics centers belonging to Ukrainian forces in the past 24 hours.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, the statement read: "The Russian Armed Forces' tactical operational air force, attack drones, and missile and artillery forces damaged transport and energy infrastructure facilities and logistics centers used by the Ukrainian Armed Forces, as well as temporary deployment points of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and foreign mercenaries in 156 locations."
For its part, the Ukrainian military stated on Sunday that it had targeted an oil refinery in the Saratov region of southwestern Russia and the Engels military airbase in the same region. The Ukrainian General Staff said in a statement that the strikes caused fires at both facilities. It added that its forces also shelled an oil depot in the Kaluga region of western Russia.
This comes as Russian authorities announced on Sunday that two people were killed in attacks by Ukrainian drones targeting Russia. Saratov region governor Roman Posargin said via Telegram that the attacks damaged civilian infrastructure in the Volga River cities of Engels and Saratov. Posargin added that two people were killed in Engels after a multi-story apartment building was damaged in the attack.
Engels is home to one of Russia's largest air bases, from which strategic bombers regularly launch missile strikes against Ukrainian cities, making it a prime target for Ukrainian counterattacks on several occasions. Ukrainian drones also targeted a logistics facility in the Samara region operated by the e-commerce giant Wildberrys, according to the company.
The Russian Defense Ministry announced that it had intercepted a total of 635 Ukrainian drones over Russian territory and Crimea overnight. For its part, the Ukrainian Air Force announced on Sunday that Ukrainian air defense forces shot down 109 out of 133 drones launched by Russia during a large-scale attack on northern, southern, and eastern Ukraine overnight.
