Mersin: The annual report of the Russian Rosatom company revealed that nuclear fuel will be delivered to the second unit of the Akkuyu plant in Mersin Province, southeastern Turkey, by the end of 2024, despite Western sanctions imposed on Russia.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the report stated: “Despite the restrictions, the construction project of the Akkuyu nuclear plant continued, with priority given to the commissioning and operation of the first unit. At the end of 2024, new nuclear fuel was delivered to the second unit.”

The report indicated that “dialogue is underway with Turkish partners to establish a legal basis for the construction of a new nuclear plant at another site in Turkey, equipped with Russian-designed reactors.”

The Akkuyu nuclear power plant, located in Mersin, Turkey, is Turkey’s first nuclear power plant. It consists of four power units equipped with Russian-made VVER-1200 Generation 3+ reactors, each with a capacity of 1,200 megawatts.

Once operational, the plant is expected to produce approximately 35 billion kilowatt-hours annually and will cover up to 10% of Turkey’s electricity needs.
