Trabzonspor: Trabzonspor suffered a 1-0 home defeat against Hungarian side Ferencv¡ros in the first leg of their Europa League play-off tie.
According to Iraqi News Agency, Christopher Zachariassen scored the only goal of the match in the 17th minute, rising to meet a cross and heading it past Andr© Onana, giving the Hungarian team a significant advantage ahead of the second leg.
The match marked the first start for Egyptian star Mohamed Salah in a Trabzonspor shirt, after he had appeared as a substitute in his official debut for the team against Kasimpasa in the Turkish league opener. Salah almost gave the home side an early lead after going one-on-one with the goalkeeper on the right, but the keeper made the save.
In the second half, Trabzonspor applied significant pressure in search of an equalizer, but their efforts were unsuccessful. Salah squandered several chances, including a shot that went just wide of the post, while a dangerous header was blocked by the defense. The crossbar also saved the Hungarian side from a header by Nigerian Paul Onuachu.
Trabzonspor’s task became even more difficult in stoppage time when the referee showed a straight red card to Chibuike Nwayo for a reckless challenge, leaving the Turkish team to finish the match with ten men. Trabzonspor now needs to overturn the deficit in the second leg, scheduled for August 27 at the Groupama Arena in Budapest, Hungary, to secure qualification for the Europa League.
Salah joined Trabzonspor during the summer transfer window on a free transfer after nine seasons with Liverpool.
