South Korea’s Nuclear Envoy Urges North Korea to Comply With UN Resolutions and Engage in Dialogue

Geneva: South Korea’s nuclear envoy called on North Korea to comply with UN Security Council resolutions regarding its nuclear and missile programs and return to the negotiating table, the South Korean Foreign Ministry announced Tuesday evening.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Foreign Minister Undersecretary for Strategic Diplomacy and Intelligence Jeong Yeon-doo made this appeal during a high-level meeting of the Conference on Disarmament held Monday in Geneva, Switzerland. Jeong emphasized the importance of North Korea responding to South Korea’s efforts for dialogue and urged compliance with the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and relevant UN resolutions.

Jeong also highlighted concerns over illegal military cooperation between North Korea and Russia, urging an immediate halt to such activities due to the threat they pose to international peace and security.

The South Korean envoy reiterated the government’s commitment to achieving ‘complete denuclearization’ of the Korean Peninsula. Jeong acknowledged the complexity of this goal, outlining a phased approach starting with dialogue and negotiation to halt North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs, progressing to reductions, and ultimately leading to dismantlement.

Despite these initiatives, North Korea has yet to respond to dialogue offers from South Korean President Lee Jae-myung. North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has characterized inter-Korean relations as those of ‘two hostile states’ and has expressed no interest in pursuing unification with the South.
