Basra: The Director General of the Southern Electricity Distribution Company, Nashat Kadhim Yassin Al-Kanaan, has announced the completion of a pioneering scientific and applied study aimed at developing electrical protection systems within distribution networks.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, this groundbreaking study, the first of its kind in the distribution sector, was carried out in collaboration with the University of Basra. It employed the German software DIgSILENT PowerFactory, known for its capabilities in analyzing and simulating electrical power systems. Al-Kanaan stated that the initiative aligns with the Ministry of Electricity's directives, led by Minister Ali Saadi Wahib, to modernize and enhance electrical distribution networks.

The study primarily aimed at achieving optimal coordination between protection systems at different voltage levels, with a focus on verifying their efficiency through practical applications. Furthermore, it explored the integration requirements for renewable energy sources in distribution networks to ensure system stability and boost operational efficiency.

Al-Kanaan highlighted that the study lays the groundwork for a strategic project that will be progressively implemented within electricity distribution networks. This initiative will adhere to the latest international standards for operating and protecting electrical networks, while utilizing modern technologies and artificial intelligence applications to improve performance and assist in decision-making processes.

He further emphasized that the preparation of this study illustrates the commitment of the General Directorate for Electricity Distribution in the South to adopt advanced engineering solutions. This includes strengthening partnerships with academic institutions and converting scientific study outputs into practical applications that aid in the development of the electricity distribution sector and improve service quality for citizens.
