Supreme Judicial Council Restricts Use of ‘Judge’ Title to Council Members

Baghdad: The judiciary has officially declared that the title “judge” is restricted to individuals currently holding positions within the Supreme Judicial Council. This decision was confirmed during a recent session of the Supreme Judicial Council.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Supreme Judicial Council, in its ninth session chaired by Judge Dr. Faiq Zaidan, President of the Federal Court of Cassation, addressed several critical issues. The council not only honored the late retired Deputy Public Prosecutor Karim Muhi Jabr but also approved promotions, transfers, secondments, and new appointments to various judicial positions. Furthermore, the organizational structures of some Courts of Appeal were approved, aligned with public interest needs.

The council further deliberated on the usage of the title ‘Judge’ by individuals who have transitioned from the judiciary to roles in the legislative or executive branches, or other non-judicial institutions. This discussion was influenced by Federal Supreme Court Decision No. (66/Federal/2021), which nullified Legislative Order No. (88) of 2004. Consequently, the council emphasized that the title ‘Judge’ is exclusive to those within the Supreme Judicial Council.

Additionally, the Supreme Judicial Council urged judges to collaborate with the Bar Association and lawyers to ensure the efficient execution of their duties. In honor of Lawyers’ Day, the council also decided to withdraw the complaints it had filed in its official capacity against lawyers.
