Syrian People’s Assembly Convenes in Damascus for First Session Amid Sharia Law

Damascus: In the presence of Sharia law, the new People's Assembly held its inaugural session on Sunday in Damascus. Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa emphasized that Syria is entering a new era focused on strengthening state institutions following the liberation and restoration of the country's freedom.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, President al-Sharaa used his opening address to stress the importance of prioritizing national interests. He highlighted the need to rebuild the economy, enhance public services, create a favorable investment climate, and enact supportive legislation for reconstruction and development.

During the session, members of the People's Assembly took the constitutional oath, with President al-Sharaa in attendance. Muhammad Taha al-Ahmad, head of the Higher Elections Committee, described the occasion as a "historic moment." He noted that the elections spanned 13 governorates and 57 electoral districts, involving more than 500 candidates. The assembly members were selected by an electoral body of over 6,800 members.
