Amman: The book “The Great Transformation: Ideas for a Coming World” serves as a poignant farewell from its author, the esteemed Iraqi novelist Latifa Al-Dulaimi. Dar Al-Mada has published this work, marking it as Al-Dulaimi’s final contribution, a message that transcends her lifetime. This publication not only enriches her legacy but also honors her enduring commitment to writing, intellectual freedom, and the human right to think.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, Latifa Al-Dulaimi passed away in Amman on March 8, 2026, a day after her eighty-seventh birthday, leaving an extensive oeuvre that includes novels, short stories, plays, essays, and translations. Her passing signifies the loss of a unique cultural figure who, since her first short story collection “A Passage to Men’s Sorrows” in 1970, merged creative sensitivity with a distinctive narrative path. Al-Dulaimi portrayed women not as objects or victims, but as thinkers and builders of their worlds amidst chaos. Her works like “The World of Lonely Women,” “Who Inherits Paradise,” and “Seeds of Fire,” intricately weave individual memory with Iraqi history, exploring themes of war, exile, and power.
Al-Dulaimi’s novels were deeply intertwined with her intellectual pursuits, viewing the novel as a knowledge laboratory where imagination complements thought. Her work seamlessly bridged narrative, philosophy, science, and women’s issues without perceiving boundaries.
Her final translation, “The Great Transformation,” epitomizes this ethos, comprising articles and studies translated from English by leading contemporary thinkers. These writings explore themes such as narrative intelligence, the Fifth Industrial Revolution, artificial intelligence, and the meaning of a good life, driven by a desire to question established truths.
