Baghdad: The Chairman of the Federal Integrity Commission, Mohammed Ali Al-Lami, recently met with the European Union Ambassador to the Republic of Iraq, Thomas Seiler, along with his delegation, at the Commission’s headquarters. The meeting focused on enhancing cooperation mechanisms and international partnerships with organizations dedicated to combating corruption.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Chairman highlighted the strategic importance of the relationship between the Commission and the European Union. He emphasized the need for practical steps to achieve shared objectives, such as promoting integrity, supporting national civil society organizations, and overcoming any barriers they may encounter. The Chairman reiterated the Commission’s commitment to including these organizations as vital partners in the national oversight system.
Discussions also covered Iraq’s progress in the Corruption Perceptions Index, as published by Transparency International, and the procedures necessary for establishing a national branch of the organization in Iraq. Additionally, there was talk of providing technical support to enhance the capabilities of the Commission’s staff, civil society organizations, and the private sector.
The European Union Ambassador, Thomas Seiler, expressed his dedication to facilitating the opening of the national branch of Transparency International, underscoring its significance in improving Iraq’s standing in the Corruption Perceptions Index and maintaining the progress in anti-corruption efforts. He remarked that this initiative builds on the successful outcomes of the first phase of the partnership project backed by the European Union and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), which has effectively promoted institutional reform and capacity development.
The discussions also highlighted the importance of establishing a transparent investment environment that aligns with international standards, enabling European companies to operate within Iraq. The improved security situation in the country presents an attractive opportunity for reputable investments that can meet their commitments and adhere to the UN Convention against Corruption.
