Abu dhabi: The Louvre Abu Dhabi begins preparations for the exhibition "Spices and Wonders: Journeys Across the Indian Ocean," aiming to highlight cultural connections and interactions. The exhibition seeks to make these connections relevant to today's audiences both within the UAE and internationally.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the exhibition combines archaeological discoveries, stories of maritime exchange, and contemporary artistic visions. It presents a comprehensive narrative spanning multiple geographical regions and historical periods. Featuring loaned pieces from 29 institutions across nine countries, the exhibition explores over a thousand years of maritime connections. It illustrates how spices, pearls, textiles, ideas, and artistic traditions were exchanged between different regions.

In this historical narrative, Emirati pearls play a significant role, embodying the pivotal position the Arabian Gulf held throughout the history of Indian Ocean trade networks. For centuries, natural pearls from the Arabian Gulf connected coastal communities with trading centers in South Asia, East Africa, and beyond.

The exhibition also contributes to reinforcing a sense of historical continuity, demonstrating that human creativity evolves through encounter, interaction, and dialogue. From this perspective, the material elements of ancient cultures are not separate from contemporary art but play an active role in understanding and producing contemporary art today.

The exhibition is a collaboration between the Louvre Abu Dhabi and the National Museum of Asian Art (GIMEE). By drawing on the diverse expertise, collections, and perspectives of both institutions, it offers a richer understanding of the Indian Ocean as a crossroads of trade, culture, and civilizational exchange.
