Tourism Authority Aims to Develop Sustainable Sector in Iraq

Baghdad:The Tourism Authority is working on transforming Iraq’s tourism sector from a seasonal activity into a sustainable economic force, aiming to attract visitors from various countries and enhance Iraq’s presence on the global tourism map.

According to Iraqi News Agency, Ali Yassin, spokesperson for the Tourism and Antiquities Authority, stated that efforts are being made to develop tourism infrastructure, improve service quality, and promote investment. The plan includes expanding Iraq’s tourism offerings to encompass religious, cultural, heritage, therapeutic, recreational, and natural tourism.

Yassin emphasized the importance of digital transformation and artificial intelligence in promoting and managing tourist destinations to build a sustainable tourism sector that aligns with Iraq’s cultural and natural potential. He highlighted the role of stability and security in boosting tourism, noting that improvements in these areas positively impact visitor numbers.

He also mentioned that Iraq is navigating a changing regional environment, with tourism movements influenced by regional and international conditions. The Islamic Republic of Iran is noted as a significant source of religious tourism, alongside visitors from various Arab, Islamic, European, North American, and Asian countries.

The Authority’s strategy involves diversifying tourism products and extending the tourism season throughout the year. Yassin stressed the importance of infrastructure development, sustainability, and high-quality services to create an integrated tourism experience. The Authority is also focused on encouraging private sector investment and international promotion of Iraqi destinations, using digital technologies to introduce tourist sites and routes.

Developing these aspects is central to building a sustainable tourism sector that leverages Iraq’s cultural and natural assets, contributing to the national economy.
