Baghdad:US President Donald Trump has confirmed that he will not be dismissing Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, despite acknowledging that the conflict with Iran played a role in the Republican Party’s losses in the recent midterm elections.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, Trump made these remarks as reported by ABC News, stating that Hegseth would continue in his role. The President’s declaration of support for Hegseth came shortly after the Democratic Party gained control of both the House and Senate, a shift attributed by some to voter dissatisfaction with the ongoing war with Iran.
In response to questions about the potential replacement of Hegseth, whom Trump has described as a strong advocate for the war, the President told reporters, “No, I think he’s doing a very good job.” Despite this public backing, Reuters cited sources suggesting that Trump might still consider appointing a new Secretary of War as Republicans continue to review their electoral setbacks.
One of Trump’s advisors commented on the situation, stating, “Hegseth may be about to lose his job because of the war.” The advisor added that accountability would be demanded, but emphasized that Trump would not be the one held responsible. Hegseth remains a polarizing figure within American politics, sparking contention even within the Republican Party itself.
