According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Indian army announced last night the launch of a military operation against “targets” in Pakistan and the Azad Kashmir region under its control. The Indian army said it successfully targeted nine sites it described as “terrorist structures,” while the Islamabad administration announced the targeting of six civilian sites, killing 26 people and wounding 46 others. The Pakistani army also announced that it shot down five Indian fighter jets during the attack.

Tensions between India and Pakistan escalated on April 22 after gunmen opened fire on tourists in the Pahalgam area of Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir, killing 26 people and wounding others. Indian officials said the attackers “came from Pakistan,” while Islamabad accused India of waging a disinformation campaign against it.

India decided to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) following the attack and asked Pakistani diplomats in New Delhi to leave the country within a week. Pakistan, for its part, denied India’s accusations and restricted the number of Indian diplomatic staff in Islamabad. It declared that it would consider any interference in rivers outside the IWT an “act of war.” It suspended all trade with India and closed its airspace to India.
