Warsaw: Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan is heading to the Polish capital, Warsaw, to participate in the session to be held on the sidelines of the informal meeting of EU Foreign Ministers.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, sources at the Turkish Foreign Ministry stated in a press release on Tuesday that Fidan will meet tomorrow with EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaya Kallas, foreign ministers of EU member states, and foreign ministers of candidate countries. Fidan participated in the event held in Brussels on August 29, 2024, on the occasion of the informal meeting of EU Foreign Ministers, after a five-year hiatus. His participation came at the invitation of what was considered at the time an attempt by the EU to revive relations with Turkey.

The upcoming meeting in Warsaw is particularly important in terms of strengthening dialogue channels between Turkey and the European Union and taking concrete steps in bilateral relations, including Turkey’s EU accession process. During the meeting, Fidan is expected to emphasize the importance of strategic cooperation between NATO and the European Union for European security.

He will also stress the need to enhance coordination and cooperation between Turkey and the EU in confronting hybrid threats and developing information-sharing mechanisms between the two sides. Fidan will also emphasize that Turkey’s counterterrorism efforts contribute to maintaining stability in our shared geography, and that Turkey expects tangible and effective support from its allies and partners.

The meeting will also discuss EU-US relations from a foreign and security policy perspective. On the sidelines of the meeting, the ministers will hold informal discussions with British Foreign Secretary David Lammy and the foreign ministers of EU candidate countries. Poland holds the presidency of the Council of the European Union during the first half of this year, and Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski will host the meeting jointly with EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas.
