New york: The UN Security Council adopted a resolution on Thursday, submitted by the United States, removing Syrian interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa and his Interior Minister, Anas Khattab, from the sanctions lists imposed on ISIS and al-Qaeda. The resolution passed with 14 votes in favor and one abstention.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the resolution was issued under Chapter VII of the UN Charter and reaffirmed the Council’s commitment to Syria’s sovereignty and unity. It expressed support for Syria’s reconstruction and economic development efforts.

The resolution also acknowledged Damascus’s commitments to facilitating humanitarian aid and combating terrorism. It urged the Syrian government to take serious measures to protect human rights, address the issue of foreign fighters and drugs, and advance a comprehensive Syrian-led political process.
