New york: The UN Security Council has issued warnings about the deteriorating situation in Bab al-Mandab, as fighting intensifies on Yemen’s western coast. The Houthis are advancing towards the strait and have claimed control over several islands in the southern Red Sea.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the UN held an emergency meeting in New York to address the growing conflict, noting that attacks have spread beyond Yemen, with reports of Houthi attacks reaching Saudi Arabia. The council members called for de-escalation and a resumption of dialogue on Tuesday evening.

UN Assistant Secretary-General Khaled Khiari reported that 125,000 people have been displaced in Yemen since the beginning of the month. Additionally, 8 people have been killed and 32 others injured, exacerbating the pressure on humanitarian operations in the region. Khiari emphasized the need to protect civilians, respect international humanitarian law, and facilitate aid access.

The council stressed the importance of prioritizing dialogue and engaging with UN efforts to reach a negotiated political solution. They highlighted the necessity of protecting freedom of navigation in the region, urging all parties involved to work towards peace and stability.
