UN Welcomes Continued Implementation of Ceasefire Agreement in Gaza Strip

Addis Ababa: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres welcomed the continued implementation of the ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip, and the continuation of the exchange of prisoners and detainees. Guterres emphasized the importance of the ongoing efforts to uphold the agreement, which aims to stabilize the region and promote peace.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Guterres stated that the United Nations will remain fully engaged in supporting the implementation of the agreement, including through the delivery of vital humanitarian assistance to the Palestinians in Gaza. The UN’s commitment to providing aid is a critical component of ensuring the well-being of the affected populations and maintaining the momentum of the ceasefire.

The Secretary-General urged all parties to abide by their commitments, renewing his call for all parties to abide by international humanitarian law and international human rights law. His appeal highlights the necessity for all stakeholders involved to adhere to established legal frameworks to foster a durable peace.

On the sidelines of his participation in the African summit held in Addis Ababa, Guterres stressed that peace in the Middle East will only be achieved through a two-state solution, which guarantees the establishment of an independent Palestinian state. This statement underscores the UN’s long-standing position on the need for a negotiated settlement to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict that respects the rights and aspirations of both peoples.
