Baghdad: The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) expressed its deep concern on Tuesday over the torture and death of engineer Bashir Khalid in prison, calling for an investigation, stressing that it must be impartial, transparent, and independent, leading to accountability for those responsible.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, UNAMI stated in a statement, “The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) is closely following the case of an Iraqi citizen who died in mysterious circumstances after being detained in Baghdad. It expresses its deep concern over reports that the victim sustained traumatic injuries during his detention and transfer to the hospital, where he died on April 7, 10 days after being detained, first at a police station and then in a detention center.”

The statement continued, “While UNAMI notes the authorities’ decision to conduct an investigation into this case, it stresses the importance of an impartial, transparent, and independent investigation leading to accountability for those responsible for human rights violations and taking the necessary measures to prevent their recurrence in the future.”
