Geneva: The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights issued a statement addressing the recent events on the Syrian coast, highlighting grave concerns over “sectarian executions.” The statement reported entire families, including women and children, among the dead, pointing to “executions on a sectarian basis.”
According to National Iraqi News Agency, the statement detailed a series of coordinated attacks allegedly carried out by elements of the former government alongside local militants in northwestern Syria’s coastal areas. There were alarming reports of entire families being killed, including individuals considered hors de combat. Reports also indicated summary executions on a sectarian basis by unidentified perpetrators, security forces tied to caretaker authorities, and elements linked with the former government.
The UN Human Rights Commission emphasized the necessity for swift action from caretaker authorities to protect Syrians. Measures should include preventing violations and abuses and ensuring accountability when they occur. The statement called for immediate, transparent, and impartial investigations into all killings and violations, with the responsible parties held accountable according to international law standards. The Commission also highlighted the need for a comprehensive transitional justice process that is inclusive and focuses on truth, justice, and accountability, noting the ongoing rise in hate speech both online and offline.
