Baghdad: The US military announced on Sunday evening that the United States had killed a leader in the Guardians of Religion organization, a branch of Al-Qaeda in Syria that had announced its dissolution. The US Central Command “CENTCOM” said in a statement on the X platform, “On February 15, US Central Command (CENTCOM) forces carried out a precision airstrike in northwest Syria, targeting and killing a senior financial and logistics official in the Guardians of Religion organization, an affiliate of Al-Qaeda.”
According to National Iraqi News Agency, the statement, which did not specify the identity of the killed official, added: “This strike comes within the framework of the Central Command’s ongoing commitment, alongside our partners in the region, to disrupt and degrade terrorists’ efforts to plan, organize and execute attacks.”
The organization, which the United States classified as “terrorist”, had announced its dissolution after the fall of President Bashar al-Assad’s rule, revealing for the first time officially that it was the branch of Al-Qaeda in Syria.
