Washington: The US State Department is closely observing the actions of Syria's new rulers as it formulates its future policy towards the country, according to State Department Spokeswoman Tammy Bruce. In her recent briefing, Bruce highlighted that the Administration of President Donald Trump is assessing the conduct of the new Syrian leadership amidst deliberations on US-Syria relations.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, Bruce noted the improbability of an immediate reduction in sanctions against Damascus. She emphasized the ongoing scrutiny of the Syrian interim authorities on various matters, which will influence the shaping of future US policies towards Syria. Bruce stressed the importance of establishing a government in Syria that is inclusive, civilian-led, and capable of ensuring the efficacy, accountability, and representativeness of its national institutions.
In response to inquiries about the potential easing of sanctions, Bruce clarified that the current mechanisms remain unchanged, with no plans to alter them at this juncture. She did, however, mention that the sanctions are not all-encompassing and that certain exceptions exist. Notably, the Biden Administration, nearing the end of its term, had previously issued a six-month waiver permitting transactions with Syrian government entities in January.
