Washington: US National Security Advisor Mike Waltz said that the Administration of President Donald Trump will make significant progress in negotiations with Iran, far beyond what previous Administrations have achieved. The US Advisor noted that President Donald Trump was very clear in his position when he said that "Iran can never possess a nuclear weapon," stressing that all options are on the table regarding Iran, but Trump absolutely prefers reaching an agreement.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, Waltz emphasized that Trump knows how to use pressure tools appropriately, hinting at the possibility of reaching an agreement with Iran, saying: "We are receiving positive indications in this direction." Waltz indicated that there will be no provisions similar to those in the nuclear agreement concluded by former US President Barack Obama with Iran.
On May 8, 2018, Trump announced the formal withdrawal of the United States from the Iranian nuclear agreement, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), signed in 2015 between Iran, the P5+1 group, and European countries. He described the agreement as "one-sided and dangerous" and that it "has not and will not bring peace or tranquility."
Following the withdrawal, the United States reimposed the highest levels of economic sanctions on Iran, leading to strained relations and an escalation of the Iranian nuclear issue. The Trump Administration had begun negotiations with the Iranians on the nuclear issue, mediated by Oman. The two sides held two rounds of indirect negotiations: the first in Muscat on April 12, and the second in Rome on April 19. The third round of US-Iranian negotiations, which was scheduled to be held in the Sultanate of Oman, was postponed until April 26.
The new round of negotiations is expected to include technical and political discussions regarding Tehran's nuclear program.
