WHO Reports Over 1,000 Deaths in Gaza Due to Evacuation Delays

New york: The World Health Organization announced that approximately 1,092 patients in the Gaza Strip died while awaiting medical evacuation between July 2024 and November 28, 2025.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the WHO Representative in the occupied Palestinian territories, Rick Peppercorn, informed reporters at the United Nations headquarters that this figure likely underrepresents the true number of deaths, as it only accounts for reported cases. The WHO has urged more countries to accept patients from Gaza and to recommence medical evacuations to the West Bank, including East Jerusalem.

Peppercorn highlighted the operational challenges within Gaza's healthcare system, revealing that 18 out of 36 hospitals and 43% of primary healthcare centers were functioning only partially. Additionally, there was a critical shortage of essential medicines and medical supplies, particularly for treating heart disease and other illnesses.

He further explained that although there had been some improvement in the approval rates for medical supplies to Gaza, the process of importing medicines and equipment remained "unnecessarily slow and complicated."
