Zurich: FIFA has suspended the ban imposed on US striker Folarin Balogun after he received a red card in the match against Bosnia and Herzegovina. Balogun will therefore be available to play against Belgium in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, Balogun scored the US's first goal against Bosnia and Herzegovina in the 45th minute before being sent off in the 64th minute. FIFA stated on Sunday that the suspension will be deferred for one year. Balogun is a key player for the US in the tournament, and his absence against Belgium would have been a significant blow to the team.
A FIFA statement read: "In accordance with Article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, the suspension of a match-day ban is suspended for a probationary period of one year." It added, "If, during the probationary period, Folarin Balogun commits another offense of a similar nature and seriousness, the suspension will be revoked and the ban will be enforced without prejudice to any additional sanction that may be imposed for the new offense."
For his part, US President Trump wrote on his "Truth Social" platform: "Thank you FIFA for doing the right thing and correcting a great injustice."
