Baghdad: The General Authority for Meteorology and Seismic Monitoring announced the recording of a 3.8-magnitude earthquake on the Richter scale east of Kirkuk province.

According to Iraqi News Agency, the authority stated that seismic monitoring stations recorded the earthquake on Saturday evening, August 1, 2026, about 25 kilometers east of Kirkuk province. The tremor, which registered a magnitude of 3.8 on the Richter scale, was felt by a number of citizens in the province.

The authority assured that it will provide the public with any new developments, urging citizens not to fall prey to rumors and to adhere to the seismic instructions and guidelines issued by competent authorities.

It further confirmed that seismic activity in Kirkuk province is considered natural and ongoing due to its location within the Zagros seismic belt. The presence of faults, folds, and geological structures contributes to the occurrence of earthquakes and the sensation of them. The authority noted that the situation does not call for concern and urged citizens to rely on information issued by official authorities.
