Thousands Rally in Istanbul in Support of Palestinians, Condemn Israeli Actions

ISTANBUL: Thousands of demonstrators took to the streets of Istanbul this morning, expressing solidarity with the Palestinian people and denouncing what they described as ongoing Israeli aggression. The marches, which saw a significant turnout, were chiefly organized by the Turkish Humanitarian Relief Foundation (IHH) and initiated from the historic Grand Hagia Sophia Mosque in Sultan Ahmed Square.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the protests featured a strong display of unity, with marchers waving Palestinian and Turkish flags, and vocalizing their disapproval of Israel’s policies. Amid stringent security protocols, the event highlighted the growing discontent with the current situation in Gaza, the West Bank, and Lebanon.

Bulent Yildirim, the head of IHH, delivered a potent speech criticizing the passive response from the Islamic world to the violence in these regions. He dismissed the notion of leniency towards Israel, citing the continuous loss of lives in Gaza, particularly among children. Yil
dirim’s rhetoric escalated as he proclaimed the inevitability of Israel’s demise, a sentiment that resonated strongly with the crowd.

The timing of the marches coincides with renewed attention to statements made by Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich regarding territorial expansion. These comments, originally made in 2016 and recently recirculated, suggest ambitions to extend Israeli borders significantly, further inflaming tensions.

The backdrop to these local demonstrations is the grim ongoing conflict in Gaza, which, supported by the U.S., has seen severe casualties and widespread destruction over the past year. Despite international calls for cessation, including resolutions from the UN Security Council and directives from the International Court of Justice, the situation remains dire, with escalating Israeli military actions in the region.
