Iraqi President Urges Swift Resolution in Detainee Investigations and Enhancements in Border Security


BAGHDAD: President Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid emphasized the urgency in addressing the backlog of detainees and enhancing border security during a meeting with Interior Minister Abdul Amir Al-Shammari and his team at the Baghdad Palace.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, President Rashid, in a statement released following Sunday’s discussions, highlighted the importance of adhering to legal deadlines in the investigations of detainees to expedite their cases. He underscored the necessity of maintaining high alert and readiness within the Ministry of Interior’s operations to match the security challenges the region is currently facing. The President pointed out the need for an upgraded and more proactive security framework, especially in intelligence operations, to safeguard Iraq’s borders and prevent any security breaches that could threaten national sovereignty, security, and stability.

In addition to focusing on internal security and detainee matters, President Rashid stressed the importance of advanc
ing the operations at border crossings. He specifically mentioned the need to finalize preliminary procedures to open the Al-Jumaimah crossing with Saudi Arabia. This development is expected to bolster economic ties and facilitate the movement of pilgrims and Umrah performers. President Rashid also commended the ongoing efforts to automate and streamline operations at these crossings, reducing bureaucratic hurdles previously faced.

During the meeting, the President confirmed that the Presidency, in cooperation with relevant authorities, is committed to conclusively resolving the detainee issue. He noted that over 15,000 detainees and prisoners, whose sentences have ended, have already been released.

Interior Minister Al-Shammari reiterated the ministry’s dedication to effectively completing its duties to serve the nation and its citizens. He elaborated on the ministry’s ongoing and future initiatives aimed at enhancing service delivery and ensuring the safety and rights of the Iraqi people.
