Iraqi Expert Chosen for Prestigious Role at COP 27 Climate Summit


Baghdad: The Conference of the Parties to the Climate (COP 27) has selected Saddam Qahtan Wahid, a member of the Iraqi negotiating delegation, to join an international team of experts. This team is tasked with preparing a global report aimed at achieving the global goal of adaptation and developing indicators for food and water security.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Saddam Qahtan Wahid, who holds advanced degrees in climate change and water resources from Colorado State University, is recognized for his significant contributions to the field. He has published over 15 international research papers on water resources engineering and hydrology, particularly in relation to climate change. His selection marks a significant acknowledgment of his expertise and a strategic win for Iraq in climate diplomacy.

The Ministry of Water Resources highlighted that Wahid is one of 78 experts chosen for this critical role from a pool of over 600 candidates. These candidates were nominated by various nations party
to the Paris Agreement. The selection process, managed by the Secretariat of the Paris Framework Convention, spanned over two months, reflecting the rigorous standards and high competition among global experts.

The inclusion of Wahid in this team not only enhances his professional stature but also positions Iraq as a key player in international efforts to address climate challenges. This role at COP 27 could also influence future negotiations and strategies related to climate adaptation and sustainability.
