Basra Governor Discusses Joint Cooperation with UN Official


Basra: Basra Governor, Asaad Abdul Amir Al-Eidani, discussed today, Monday, with the representative of the World Food Program (WFP) ways of joint cooperation to support environmental projects and reduce carbon emissions.



According to National Iraqi News Agency, Al-Eidani stressed during the meeting that “the governorate started an environmental initiative two years ago, which included planting 70,000 mangrove seedlings in Khor Al-Zubair, and the number rose to 300,000 seedlings last year, while a contract was signed this year to plant 500,000 seedlings, with the aim of reaching 5 million seedlings in the future.



The governor pointed out the importance of benefiting from the expertise of advanced countries in mangrove cultivation, stressing that the experiment is new in Iraq and needs technical support to ensure its success.



He added that the meeting discussed efforts to replant palm trees in areas that were previously destroyed, stressing the importance of transferring expertise and modern technology to support these initiatives and achieve sustainable development in the governorate.
