Prime Minister Confirms Economic Reforms to Boost Private Sector


Baghdad: Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani confirmed proceeding with economic reforms supporting the private sector, noting that the World Bank is called upon to enhance this experience.



According to National Iraqi News Agency, al-Sudani’s media office stated that the Prime Minister met with Osman Dayon, Vice President of the World Bank for the Middle East and North Africa. They discussed cooperation between Iraq and the World Bank, focusing on the progress of development projects within the country. The Prime Minister emphasized that projects aimed at enhancing the non-oil economy and creating jobs are prioritized by the government.



Al-Sudani further mentioned that the government views the World Bank as a vital partner in its reform initiatives. He highlighted that the Ministerial Council for the Economy has approved a program developed in collaboration with the World Bank, which has already shown positive outcomes in customs and tax reforms.



The statement also noted that the meeting included discussions on financing the rehabilitation of old railway systems and other development initiatives. Dayon committed the World Bank to finance several oil, energy, and infrastructure projects. Additionally, the potential role of the International Finance Corporation (IFC) in funding private sector projects was also explored.
