Baghdad: The Permanent National Committee for International Humanitarian Law, in coordination with the National Security Chancellery and in cooperation with the PAX Foundation, organized a national conference to launch a policy focused on the protection of civilians. The event was held under the auspices of Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the conference saw the participation of notable figures, including the Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Iraq, Mohammed Al-Hassan, and Prime Minister’s advisors Dr. Ali Fawzi and Dr. Zidane Khalaf. Representatives from the Parliamentary Security and Defense Committee, various ministries and security agencies, ambassadors, and international community organizations, along with Mr. Louis Sacco, Patriarch of the Chaldeans in Iraq and the world, were also present.

National Security Advisor Qasim Al-Araji conveyed the Prime Minister’s greetings, acknowledging the government’s efforts in advancing an essential aspect of its program. Al-Araji emphasized that the conference was a significant event aiming to reinforce the rule of law, highlighting that the policy for civilian protection is both a national and international commitment, reflecting Iraq’s dedication to security and stability.

Al-Araji elaborated that this policy aligns with human rights standards, the Iraqi constitution, and international agreements ratified by Iraq. It aims to prevent violations, ensure accountability, and respect the dignity and rights of civilians, particularly children and women, while maintaining transparency within security institutions.

He acknowledged the substantial challenges Iraq faces but asserted that the resolve of the Iraqi people is more robust. The policy is intended to translate into actionable measures through collaboration with the international community, reinforcing Iraq’s commitment to safeguarding its citizens and ensuring accountability for any rights violations.

The UN representative highlighted the Secretary-General’s commendation of Iraq’s initiative, expressing the United Nations’ and international community’s support for Iraq’s efforts to uphold human rights principles and civilian protection.
