Baghdad: Syrian security forces arrested one of the most prominent Air Force Intelligence officers during the era of former President Bashar al-Assad, on charges of involvement in committing war crimes against civilians. The Syrian Ministry of Interior announced the arrest of Brigadier General Sultan al-Tinawi, who is accused of participating in a massacre in the Jirud area in the Damascus countryside in July 2016.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Ministry of Interior released a statement via the “X” platform, detailing the arrest carried out by the Latakia Security Directorate. The statement emphasized the gravity of the charges against al-Tinawi, specifically his alleged involvement in war crimes against civilians.
The Ministry further clarified that al-Tinawi has been referred to the Public Prosecution to proceed with investigations and legal processes. The arrest marks a significant development in addressing alleged war crimes committed during the former regime.
