Baghdad: The Chairman of the Federal Integrity Commission, Mohammed Ali Al-Lami, emphasized the necessity of unified local, regional, and international efforts to combat corruption and alleviate its impacts. He highlighted challenges in extraditing suspects and recovering embezzled funds as critical issues that need addressing.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, during a meeting at the Commission’s headquarters with Thomas Seiler, the European Union Ambassador to Iraq, Al-Lami underscored the significance of the United Nations Convention against Corruption. He argued for enhanced cooperation among state parties and relevant organizations to develop preventive measures and engage in international programs aimed at curbing corruption. These initiatives encompass awareness-raising, educational, and training programs that aim to develop expertise and new skills for those combating corruption.

Al-Lami expressed optimism for sustained collaboration with the European Union Mission to foster integrity, transparency, and anti-corruption efforts. He acknowledged the mission’s support for various programs, including the “Supporting Justice Initiatives to Combat Corruption and Promote Commercial Dispute Resolution” project, backed by the European Union Mission and executed by the United Nations Development Programme in Iraq.

The initiative has been instrumental in providing training, skills development, and capacity building, particularly in drafting legislation, empowering community organizations, and aligning with international efforts.

Thomas Seiler, the European Union Ambassador to Iraq, reiterated the European Union’s commitment to supporting Iraq, particularly its oversight bodies like the Integrity Commission. He commended Iraq’s escalating anti-corruption endeavors, which have significantly contributed to mitigating corruption risks. Seiler also highlighted the importance of the Commission’s awareness-raising activities, investigative measures, and punitive actions.
