Baghdad: Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Fuad Hussein affirmed that Iraq will continue to play its regional and international role in seeking calm and containment. A statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Hussein received a phone call today, Monday, from the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Abbas Araqchi, during which they discussed the latest developments in the region in light of the recent military escalation.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, this is the second call between the two ministers since the start of the aggression against the Islamic Republic of Iran, as part of ongoing communication and political coordination to confront the developments of the current crisis. During the call, the Iranian minister affirmed that his country is closely monitoring military developments, noting that the Zionist entity is seeking to expand the scope of the war to include the Gulf region. He explained that Iran’s position is clear in rejecting the expansion of the conflict, whether geographically or towards any other country.

Araghchi also emphasized that the ongoing operations are part of a “defensive response” to the Israeli attacks and do not aim to escalate the confrontation with other parties. For his part, Fuad Hussein stressed that Iraq’s position on the aggression is clear and firm, and that the Iraqi government is continuing its tireless efforts through diplomatic channels to prevent the escalation of the conflict and achieve a ceasefire.

He pointed out the importance of continuing to adopt an approach that rejects expanding the scope of the war, both in terms of geography and the parties involved, warning of the repercussions of any further escalation on the security and stability of the region. Fuad Hussein affirmed, according to the statement, that Iraq will continue to play its regional and international role in seeking to de-escalate and contain the crisis within politically and diplomatically manageable frameworks.
