Washington: The US Treasury announced that the total holdings of global bonds this year exceeded $9 trillion, while Iraq remains, for the second year, outside the top 20 countries with the largest holdings of these bonds.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Treasury’s latest 2025 table revealed that Iraq did not increase its holdings of US bonds, which remained at approximately $30 billion. As a result, Iraq did not enter the top 20 largest holders of US bonds.
The Treasury reported that the holdings of global countries in US bonds amounted to $9 trillion and $13 billion. Japan is the largest holder of US bonds, with $1.134 trillion, followed by the United Kingdom with $807 billion, China with $757 billion, the Cayman Islands with $448 billion, and Belgium with $411 billion.
Additionally, Saudi Arabia and the UAE are among the top twenty countries with the largest holdings of US bonds, possessing $134 billion and $113 billion, respectively. Iraq holds approximately $32 billion in US bonds, which are considered one of the country’s reserve investments.
