Islamabad: At least 72 people have been killed and more than 130 others were injured due to severe flooding that has swept across large areas of Pakistan over the past ten days, amid official warnings of a worsening crisis as monsoon rains continue.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Pakistani Disaster Management Authority stated in a statement on Monday that at least 72 people have been killed due to monsoon rains, followed by severe flooding that has lasted for ten days across the country.

It indicated that the provinces of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Sindh, and Balochistan are the most affected by the floods, calling on local officials in those provinces to exercise extreme caution and vigilance, given the continued rainfall and the possibility of the situation deteriorating in the coming days.

The Authority urged tourists to avoid visiting the affected areas, warning that continued rains could lead to highway closures and worsening flooding, exposing visitors and local residents to further risks.

It is worth noting that Pakistan experienced above-normal monsoon rainfall in 2023, in addition to unprecedented flooding caused by melting snow in the north and south, resulting in the deaths of more than 1,700 people, the displacement of millions, and the country’s losses amounting to billions of dollars.
