Baghdad: Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani announced that the summer of 2026 will witness the securing of a gas supply platform, which is expected to enhance the flexibility in meeting the needs of gas plants. This announcement came during the inauguration of Turbine Unit 13 at the Bismayah Investment Gas Plant.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, al-Sudani highlighted the progress in the electricity sector, stating that ongoing projects are set to achieve an additional 60,000 megawatts with their completion. The government is collaborating with major companies like GE and Siemens to enhance power production. GE is involved in a project targeting the production of 24,000 megawatts through gas turbines, while Siemens is contributing to the production of 15,000 megawatts. Additionally, thermal power plants are expected to add 10,000 megawatts to the national grid.

Al-Sudani further mentioned the government’s support for investment plants, which will contribute another 10,000 megawatts. Furthermore, solar, clean, and renewable energy projects are anticipated to provide up to 3,000 megawatts. The government is also focusing on improving transmission and distribution networks to increase the efficiency of the national grid and ensure a sustainable electricity supply.

He emphasized the importance of regulating electricity consumption through modern collection methods, such as smart meters and prepaid cards, to secure production costs and fund energy production and fuel purchases. This initiative aims to enhance the financial sustainability of the energy sector.

During the inauguration at the Bismayah Investment Gas Power Plant, al-Sudani introduced the gas turbine unit (13), which will contribute an additional 300 megawatts to the plant’s output. He also reopened units that had undergone maintenance, restoring about 210 megawatts of production capacity, thereby increasing the station’s total production to 5,000 megawatts.

Al-Sudani acknowledged the efforts of workers and companies, including the Ministry of Electricity and GE, for their rapid completion of work. He reiterated the government’s dedication to developing the national energy infrastructure and praised the partnership between the private sector and state agencies in enhancing service provision.
