Basra: The Ministry of Oil announced on Sunday that the Basra Gas Export Terminal received the largest semi-refrigerated liquefied natural gas (LNG) tanker in its history. The ministry stated in a statement that “the second berth at the Basra Gas Company’s LNG Export Terminal received yesterday the 188-meter-long (GasChem) tanker with a capacity of 20,000 tons of semi-refrigerated LNG, scheduled for export to China.” The ministry noted that “this achievement is an important step for Iraq and the company in the field of LNG exports.”

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the second berth was fully rehabilitated and entered service in September of last year after its waterfront was deepened, enabling it to receive giant tankers, as part of the company’s growing export capabilities. Since 2016, Iraq has been able, through the Basra Gas Company, to cover the local need for cooking gas (LPG) and export the surplus, which has contributed to supporting the national economy and diversifying its sources.

It was further pointed out that the company has also succeeded in doubling the production of associated gas from 250 million standard cubic feet per day to more than one billion standard cubic feet per day, which has contributed to reducing emissions and limiting the waste of natural resources.
