Baghdad: Head of the State of Law Coalition, Nouri al-Maliki, emphasized that elections have conditions and controls, and they are not a walk in the park. If they are postponed, a disaster will befall the country.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, during his meeting with a group of families of martyrs and wounded, al-Maliki expressed high appreciation for the sacrifices of the martyrs, the wounded, and the victims of terrorism, renewing his support for their families. He pointed out that thanks to their sacrifices, Iraqis enjoy freedom and a decent life after the challenges faced under the former Baath Party rule.

Al-Maliki emphasized that the sacrifices of the martyrs and the wounded were pivotal in restoring Iraq, countering assumptions that the country was nearing its end. He assured that Iraq would remain strong and resilient due to the determination of its people. He noted that terrorist attacks in Iraq were orchestrated by various entities worldwide with the intention of destroying the nation.

He further asserted that upcoming elections will proceed as scheduled and warned that postponing them would undermine the political process and the legitimacy of parliament and government. Al-Maliki stressed that the Accountability and Justice Commission cannot be abolished as its existence is constitutionally mandated, and its absence would lead to chaos.

Praising the role of the commission, al-Maliki acknowledged its efforts in vetting candidates participating in the elections. He called the elections a national and constitutional obligation, urging citizens to engage in the electoral process as it forms the foundation for government formation and political process sustainability.

Al-Maliki reiterated that Iraq is governed by a democratic system where policies are shaped by the will, voice, and contribution of its citizens. He urged respect for voter will, cautioning against the influence of money in transforming votes into mere transactions.
