Sanaa: The United Nations issued a warning today about the impending intensification of the hunger crisis in Yemen, set to worsen starting next month. The situation is expected to affect millions of people across the country, pushing them into acute hunger.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Yemen confirmed through a statement on the X platform that 18 million people, or 52% of Yemen’s population of 35.6 million, are at risk of facing acute hunger beginning next September. These individuals will require urgent humanitarian food assistance to survive.

The statement further highlighted that 41,000 people are expected to experience severe food insecurity, reaching famine levels. It was noted that at least one in five families will encounter a near-total shortage of food and other basic needs, significantly increasing their risk of death due to starvation.

The office urged for immediate support to prevent the escalation of the food
insecurity crisis and to stop the spread of famine, particularly in regions identified as high-risk. There is a call to action for global response to mitigate this looming humanitarian catastrophe.

Furthermore, the United Nations office in Yemen pointed out that the current year’s humanitarian response plan is critically underfunded. So far, only 17% of the required $2.48 billion has been secured to address the humanitarian needs of approximately 10.5 million people in Yemen.
