Brussels: Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani has called upon NATO countries to collaborate and work towards achieving regional stability. In a speech delivered at the NATO headquarters in Brussels, where he was invited by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Al-Sudani highlighted the turbulent transformations occurring in the Middle East, including violations of international principles, crimes against humanity, and regional security threats.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, Al-Sudani stressed the importance of establishing a constructive partnership with NATO, grounded in a sovereign decision aimed at fostering long-term comprehensive relations across various fields. He asserted that Iraq is no longer a security concern but a reliable strategic partner, emphasizing the successful partnership with the alliance as a model for the region.
Al-Sudani further elaborated that Iraq serves as a prominent model in the Middle East, characterized by its pluralistic, federal, and democratic system. Despite numerous challenges and crises, the Iraqi people have transitioned robustly towards democracy. He underscored the government’s commitment to building sustainable relationships with countries and international institutions that align with Iraq’s political values of pluralism and freedom.
The Prime Minister articulated the principle of balance in Iraq’s foreign policies, avoiding biases and axes, and guided by the supreme interests of Iraq and its people. He expressed the desire to strengthen relations with NATO countries, participate in regional security initiatives, and develop capabilities in air defense and deterrence, ensuring Iraq’s sovereignty and supporting regional stability.
Al-Sudani emphasized the importance of cooperation with NATO in addressing terrorism, border security, organized crime, cyber threats, and regional stability challenges. He expressed Iraq’s anticipation of NATO’s support in building deterrence capabilities and distancing the country from regional conflicts. Resolving conflicts through diplomacy and international law was highlighted as a priority, warning of the broader consequences of regional instability.
The Iraqi government’s focus on reconstruction and fulfilling its cultural and developmental role in the region and the world was reiterated. With upcoming legislative elections, Al-Sudani affirmed the government’s commitment to conducting the process fairly and transparently, supporting pluralism and a peaceful transfer of power.
Al-Sudani also addressed economic and environmental challenges, particularly in securing water resources and diversifying the economy beyond oil. The government aims to restrict arms to the state, reform security services, and promote entrepreneurship, foreign investment, and local industries.
The Prime Minister highlighted priorities such as strengthening national unity, empowering youth, women, and marginalized groups, and supporting education and healthcare for inclusive progress. He warned against aggression and the unlawful use of force, urging the international community to act responsibly.
Al-Sudani expressed Iraq’s desire to peacefully resolve the Iranian nuclear issue within international law frameworks and support Syria’s stability through inclusiveness and pluralism. He condemned violations in the occupied Palestinian territories, calling for an end to the genocide in Gaza.
Finally, Al-Sudani advocated for a regional system based on interdependence, peaceful conflict resolution, and cooperation to address common challenges. He envisioned partnerships integrating economic, political, and security dimensions to support stability and collective development, positioning Iraq as a source of regional stability and a contributor to international peace and security.
